I got my start at Grace working in the early childhood program as the pre-kindergarten and kindergarten teacher. Those 4-5 year olds kept me on my toes and brought me so much joy!! Many years later, I decided it was time for a change and began teaching fourth grade. We have a lot of fun together and much of the learning we do is hands-on.
In the fall of 2005, the fourth graders each published their very own book! We also learned how to quilt with the help of some expert quilters, who are also grandparents of our students. A valuable part of our learning involves improving our communication skills. Through oral reports, plays, pen pals, and events like "Students Do The News," the students become more comfortable and confident in their speaking and writing abilities. Better communication skills will serve them in many areas of their lives - from academics and their future careers to being powerful witnesses for Christ.
I love music and try to incorporate it in the classroom setting as often as I can. Through the years, I have had a variety of class pets from fish to box turtles. We also enjoy learning about different cultures, and the Ellis Island unit is always a big hit! The students learn to appreciate the diversity around them. We often interview senior citizens to find out about their life stories, and we have been blessed by their wisdom and experience.
As a teacher I want student to know themselves and love themselves. Good self-esteem and self-confidence are the foundations for many important life attitudes and skills. I love helping students learn and seeing them get excited about learning. It brings me great satisfaction when former students come back to visit, and they share the impact Grace had on their lives. These are exciting times for Grace Lutheran School, as we look to the future in expanding Christ-centered education for all.
